Summer Spirits: Sip or Mix?

Mon, Aug 14, 23  |  spirits blog

Rum, tequila and vodka are go-to mixers as the weather warms up and thirsty folks seek out refreshment. That’s because these spirits are usually lighter than their counterparts, bourbon, gin and scotch, and many summer cocktails use one of these spirits as their base. And, as with all spirits, some are ideal for mixing while others stand on their own as sippers. We’ve made some choices for mixing and some for sipping neat or on the rocks from each spirit variety.

VODKA

SIP: Belevedere

Belvedere’s Master Rye Distillers draw from a 600-year polish vodka-making history to artfully craft Polska rye into an extraordinary vodka of distinct taste and character.

MIX: Tito’s

A handmade vodka from our next door neighbors in Austin, TX, Tito’s has staked a big share of the domestic vodka market. Outstanding in martinis, cosmopolitans and spiked homemade lemonade.

RUM

SIP: El Dorado 15-Year-Old

Most any spirit that’s been aged for 15 years is worthy of serving neat, and El Dorado’s 15 year old expression is no exception. Full bodied and vibrant!

MIX: Bacardi Superior, Gold or Black

Bacardi has been a front runner in rum for generations. Try Bacardi Gold Label in a Rum & Cola; the Black Label makes a dynamite Hurricane.

TEQUILA

SIP: El Mayor Añejo

MIX: El Jimador Silver

Double distilling produces the fruity, spicy profile for which El Jimador Silver is noted. Mix into your next margarita or Paloma for a sensational cocktail.

These vibrant cocktails and spirits are especially satisfying when the heat of summer is on. Colonial’s Celebration Specialists are happy to guide your taste buds to warm weather refreshment.
